Esperance is a town located on the southern coast of Western Australia, about 720 km (447 miles) east-southeast of the state capital, Perth. The Condingup Community Hall is a charming location with a beautiful, level expanse of grassland. Its proximity to Wharton Beach and other nearby attractions makes it an ideal base camp for exploring the area. The center offers various amenities for campers, including toilets, showers, and a drinking fountain for clean water. 4G Telstra phone reception is also available, and pets are permitted on the premises. Shade, tables, and waste disposal bins are provided on-site, and generators are allowed. 

While the site is unsuitable for tent camping, camper trailers, caravans, campervans, and motorhomes are welcome. Condingup community hall also offers big rig access, but time limits apply as the site is only open for 24 hours. For families with children, there is a playground available on-site. Guests can also support the local economy by purchasing a bottle of wine at the Condingup Tavern’s cellar door. It’s worth confirming with the camp representative that no events are scheduled during your stay, as the location is also used as a showground.

Membinup Beach

Membinup Beach

Membinup Beach is a quiet camping area situated 70 kilometers east of Esperance. The Membinup Beach Campground, also known as the “4WD campground,” is located at the end of a 4WD track, but it’s also accessible to 2WD vehicles. If driving a 2WD, turn right before the camp sign to avoid getting stuck on the soft ground. The site is covered with hard gravel and can accommodate approximately 20 vehicles. Limited amenities are provided at Membinup Beach, with only a picnic table and shelter available.

However, if you require more facilities, Wharton Bay is just 20 minutes away, and there are several car parks with toilets and sinks for handwashing nearby. The campground is suitable for groups of up to six camping units, from tents to RVs and caravans. Visitors can enjoy the beautiful scenery in the area, including the magnificent boulders and the crystal-clear waters of the beginner’s surf beach at Wharton Bay, which features fine white sand. The site allows fishing and swimming, and pets are welcome.

There are on-site toilets, shade, and tables for relaxing. There are also walking tracks to explore, Aboriginal artwork, and Wave Rock nearby. Open fire pits are available for those who want to cook meals and enjoy the outdoors. However, the area can be dangerous when wet, so caution is advised. The track leading to the site is accessible by 4WD vehicles only, and the signage can be difficult to follow. Some areas of the trail may be overgrown, so take caution.

Scaddan Rd Old Stockpile Site is a standard ex-gravel stockpile site, easily accessible from both ends. The site is a flat gravelled area that provides good wind protection from the surrounding bush. Campers should note there are no facilities on site. However, dogs are allowed to accompany their owners. The campsite is accessible to various types of vehicles, including caravans, big rigs/buses, motorhomes, motorbikes, and camper trailers. Telstra reception is available, and although the area is close to the road, some road noise may be heard. Visitors may also be lucky to encounter some wildlife at the site.

Margaret Cove is a hidden gem perfect for camping, as it is secluded and only accessible by 4WD vehicles. However, visitors should be aware that mice can sometimes be a problem. The campsite has no facilities, so visitors must be self-contained. Margaret Cove is also a popular spot for fishing and diving. 

Visitors should bring enough drinking water, as no water is available in the park. No rubbish bins are at the site, therefore, visitors are expected to take their rubbish with them when they leave. Fires are not permitted at this site, and pets are also not allowed. Tents and generators are allowed, and the camp is accessible to camper trailers. However, caravans are prohibited because only self-contained vehicles are permitted at the campsite.

Neds Corner Campsite

Neds Corner Campsite

Neds Corner Campsite is a free camping site located 9.5km from the highway, immediately after the floodway. The campground permits dogs and accommodates a range of vehicles, including motorbikes, RVs, camper trailers, and caravans. While camping in tents is allowed, you must be utterly self-sufficient since there are no facilities. The site features breathtaking scenery, wildlife, and shaded areas and is free from traffic, except for the charming chirping of birds, the buzzing of bees, and pesky sand flies. The region is embellished with spindly bits of wood, a forest of grevillea, banksia, and a few red kangaroos.

JCP Campsite

JCP Campsite is located in a stunning area surrounded by dunes and offers the option of camping on the beach. This free campground features swimming facilities and is pet-friendly. The site is accessible to 4WD, motorbikes, and camper trailers and has 4WD tracks for easy navigation. The campground allows tents, but you must have self-contained facilities. Generators are also permitted. The maximum stay limit is seven days, and visitors can enjoy fishing. Please ensure no waste is left behind, as the region is home to several marsupials close to being threatened.

Cascade Nature Reserve Campground is a serene and peaceful camping site. It is situated in a limestone “gravel” pit just off Cascade Road within the reserve. The campground offers a large, flat area for camping, but please note that access down the small track leading to the campsite may be too tight for larger vans. There are no amenities available, and campers must be self-sufficient. To maintain the camp’s pristine beauty, take all trash with you and leave the area free of litter.

Low-Cost Camping in Esperance

Esperance Overflow Campsite

Esperance Overflow Campsite

Esperance Overflow Campsite is only available from the end of December to the beginning of January. When all the caravan parks in Esperance are fully booked during Xmas and the new year, the town offers an overflow site at the Greater Sports Grounds. There are no prior reservations required for the overflow area. Instead, you can go to the self-registration area and information booth at the entrance upon arrival.

The site is wheelchair accessible and has both powered and unpowered sites, an indoor basketball stadium, toilets, and showers. Dogs are permitted at the overflow but must always be kept on a leash. There is also a camp kitchen, drinking water, and generator usage is allowed. The site features a playground and Telstra and TV reception. It has pull-through bays and is accessible to motorhomes, large rigs, caravans, camper trailers, and tents. Please note that the campground is closed during the off-season.

Unlike crowded campsites, this site offers plenty of space and is owned and operated by Greg, known for his warm hospitality. The Paddock provides easy access for large vehicles, and the flat and level ground is ideal for parking. Self-contained vehicles are preferred for the site. Please note that no drinking water is available on the property, so it is recommended to top up your water supply at the overflow campground before arriving. Dogs are welcome at the site.

Despite slight noise from the nearby main road and train line at night, the park features shaded areas with tables and bins, and open fires are allowed.
